16th July: slow start to the day then visited the Museum of the Goldfields- an eclectic collection of gold mining memorabilia, historical facts, current social conditions in Kalgoorlie- Boulder, various indigenous artifacts, a collection of taxidermied birds and animals of the area, a collection of aerial photographs of nearby salt lakes, a vault of various gold nuggets found in The Golden Mile, plus things made of gold, and a tower with a view over Kalgoorlie.
We then visited Boulder, an extension of Kalgoorlie with better preserved but equally empty buildings down the Main Street, Burt St. we had coffee and a snack at Dharma cafe, then walked up and down Burt St, and visited the Boulder Goldfields war museum, its contents self evident!
We then prepared to leave tomorrow- filling up with diesel, water, cleaning mud off our mudflaps etc and I made us up more muesli. We will have dinner at the Exchange Hotel to soak up a few local vibes!
The Exchange Hotel is where the action is in Kalgoorlie on a Wednesday night! Paddy’s restaurant was full of young people eating and laughing and doing the Wednesday night trivia quiz! Nic had lamb shanks and I had WA free caught fillet fish with mashed sweet potato and broccolini.
