22nd July: Morning was clear and cold , if windy, but we decided that a solo trip down to the Bird Observatory on the difficult road was not indicated, principally because if we got bogged it would be a long walk for help and the signs indicated that EBO staff will not be involved in any rescues! We were the only vehicle anywhere near the place.
We went back up to the highway and on to Madura, but on the way our UHF aerial fell off! Fortunately Nic saw it happen and we were able to retrieve it but the thread was ruined! We replaced it with another one we had, and it taped it in place with my handy black electrical tape. We arrived at Madura where we played a reasonably straightforward par 3.We then went back to the Madura lookout for a view across the escarpment to the the beach in the far distance. The road became progressively less treed, with low shrubs and the odd acacia and casuarina only with some low gums.We then reached Mundrabilla for another easy-ish par 3.
We drove on to Eucla for the night- a pick your own site caravan park with nice neighbours.. no fresh water which I guess is expected on the Nullarbor but no desert yet!
It must be mentioned that we are on Central Western Time or “Eucla time”, a very small time zone 3/4 hour ahead of Perth and 3/4 hour behind Adelaide- In the days of the Old Telegraph station that transmitted all information between Perth and Adelaide, because the distance was too great to be spanned without an intermediary relay station, they needed a common time at Eucla so they split the difference between Perth and Adelaide! It is not an official time zone but it is used locally and Apple and Google reset our phones accordingly!
Things keep dropping off keep an eye on Nick and handle him gently
