July 26th: I started the day with a quick walk to Shelley Beach. We then headed for Streaky Bay on our friend David Keightley’s recommendation. The weather remained cold and bleak and rainy, however, we found the restaurant Drift overlooking the beach and the jetty and got a window table. Nic ordered grilled King George Whiting and chips and I had a wonderful seafood chowder also with King George Whiting, scallops prawns and calamari. This cheered us up considerably! We went to go for a walk along the jetty, but it was closed, and had been since January.

We headed a little further down the west side of the Eyre Peninsula to Venus Bay and then cut across back to the Eyre Highway and continued our journey through Wudinna to Kimba, where, after investigating other options, we chose to stay at the Roadhouse where we could choose our own drive-through powered site. We had an Indian meal there as the roadhouse is now apparently run by Sikhs. It proved to be not such a good choice for me, as the vegetarian curry had been sitting in its container too long and I had a night of food poisoning. So much for the vegetarian option!

Three days ago a convoy of 80 trucks left Norseman containing hay as a gift from WA farmers to drought stricken SA farmers. We heard that they spent tonight in Wudinna and were fêted with a celebratory dinner and breakfast, and were travelling on to Cleve tomorrow ( Sunday) so we decided that we would get up early and meet them in Cleve!
