July 24th: awoke to a cold bleak morning but it wasn’t actually raining! We drove the 30km to Nullarbor and played a long par 5, after being warned of snakes and that the fairway crossed an airport runway! We had a coffee to warm up, seeing what looked like brown magpies around the servo! It began to rain as we drove to the head of the Bite, but the rain didn’t perturb the 10 or so couples of mother and baby southern right whales we saw from various vantage points swimming thru an azure sea. We passed through a very desolate stretch of road with no trees either side. The rain then started coming down in earnest as we teed off on a 540 meter par 5. After each shot we had, Nic drove the car and van parallel to us so that we wouldn’t face the long walk back!
We then headed off to Penong, as thoughts of Fowlers beach in such inclement weather seemed impossible. It apparently only rains in the Nullarbor 3 times per year and the locals are very grateful when it does rain, so we can’t complain!
We stayed in a drive through site and went to the pub for dinner. When we returned the diesel heater ceased to work. Nic persevered with working out what was wrong. He changed a fuse and we got heat once more!!
Our forward plans will probably be curtailed by the rain.

Hi Suzanne and Nic,
ReplyDeleteKeep your eyes peeled for the great hay drive.
Farmers from WA are shipping about 70 semi trailers worth of hay to farmers in South Australia which has very little if at all rain, hence no crops for the sheep and cattle. Heard about it on News Radio this morning. Should be quite the sight to see if you can.
Travel home safely, I am greatly enjoying reading of your travels.
I cannot believe that it is raining on the Nullabor it rained when when we went to the pinnacles in Perth which was surreal with the yellow sand and puddles whales look great though
ReplyDeleteI see you are playing golf as you go the concept of driving across a desert just to play with small white balls seems a bit extreme to me surely there are enough at home still replacing the kangaroos as a hazard with snakes risk of sandstorms and an aeroplane landing as you hit the first perfect hole in one is certainly different and would add the element of novelty to the crash investigation “just coming into land strewth the skippers just been knocked out by a golf ball … sound of explosions tape ends”
