1st June: What a day! We left Manning Gorge heading for Mt Hart and firstly went to Galvans Gorge. It looked a nice spot but was too totally crowded with people to bother with a swim. We then headed to Adcock Gorge but were advised by those on the road to turn around as the road was too rough for our caravan, so that is exactly what we did. Jill and Craig persisted in visiting the Gorge in their vehicle. We continued on to the Mt Hart Wilderness Lodge turnoff. However, when we arrived there, there was a big sign saying “Road closed”. We were sitting there for a while considering what we should do next, when another vehicle arrived. This was driven by Kurt from Port Stephens, who was about to start his first day of work at Mt Hart. He suggested that we follow him down the road which we did! He videoed us at each river crossing to show his boss that the road was in fact passable. Nic drove extremely well, negotiating many muddy stretches as well as the water crossings.
It took us 2 hours to drive the 50km into Mt Hart. When we arrived, we learned that Main roads closed the Road, not the owners of Mt Hart Lodge. The Lodge itself is a very upmarket affair with “glamping” for visitors who all arrive by plane at the airstrip attached to the resort! We have the camping area with hot water facilities to ourselves except for the electrician/tourguide/caretaker and his and her family in their large caravan and one other couple who ignored the road closure sign.
We had a delicious meal of fish and chips - St George Whiting from Shark Bay- at the Bistro with beer for Nic and rosé for me. We have booked in to their glamour restaurant tomorrow night to celebrate Nic’s birthday early! We will then hopefully meet back up with Craig and Jill at Birdwood station for the following night.
