15th June: After doing the washing and watching Insiders, our day in Port Hedland started at the Visitors centre in Wedge St, the heart of PH, which was closed! However outside it there was an artwork by Ann Sibosado in the form of a shade called the “Seeds of Change” made from Laser cut and folded aluminium treated with a custom powder coat. We then walked to the main jetty to watch the iron ore bulk carriers leaving port. The ships were resistered in many different countries eg Hong King, Liberia, but all were carrying iron ore to China. We then walked the heritage trail next to the wharf telling the story of the development of Port Hedland from 1863 when the Mystery anchored in a mangrove cove off the North West coast, through the heydays of the pastoral industry and the gold rush at Marble Bar until the present day of iron ore, salt and manganese. The Dalgetty museum was also closed, however I discovered another heart of PH - the Hedland Emporium store, where you could buy every conceivable thing from furniture to camping gear to work clothes to stationery to kitchen bathroom and cleaning equipment! We returned to the van where Nic fell asleep under a tree and I went back to Woolworths for Eco soap sheets and more pegs plus barramundi for dinner and then decided to explore Pretty Pond at the entrance to the sea of the Pretty River. I initially drove down a dirt track looking for the observation platform, which didn’t materialise but the mangrove swamps there contained many small birds- the grey fantail in particular.

Barramundi was fried in panko breadcrumbs with accompanying salad and rice. We then watched our first episode of Ted Lasso.
