May 10th: A false start to the CWA fair in search of chillie jam! It was last week! We then went to Bunnings for Nic to purchase a TV antenna for the caravan so that we can watch TV in real time. We then went to the Aviation Museum very close to the caravan park. There was a very interesting DVD about the battle for Australia or the bombing of Darwin on 19th February 2942, after fall of Singapore and the bombing of Pearl harbour. Our defence forces were totally unprepared for the attack and there were civilian targets. Over 300 were killed.

After the first world war, in 1919 Billy Hughes offered £10000 for an all Australian pilot and his team who could fly from Hounslow Heath aerodrome  to Darwin in a British made aircraft in under 30 days. Ross Smith pilot and his brother Keith Smith copilot took up the challenge with their mechanics Wally Shiers and James Bennett in a Vickers Vimy converted bomber:- G-EAOU.

They made it and the details of the flight and the actual aircraft are on display in the Aviation museum. There is also a huge decommissioned B52 bomber (gutted at end of Cold War and evidence sent to USSR in 1990) and an F -111.

Other events of the day included a shopping trip to Coles in search of chillie jam and other supplies.

We had a pizza at the Last Supper where we went with Ros and Paul last year! I had a wonderful truffle and mushroom pizza whilst Nic went for a Green Goddess, with a Sparkling red from McLarenvale. We then had a walk along the esplanade in Bicentennial park, where we saw a number of bush stone-curlews very close to us.

  1. (cb) the bush stone curlew is our fave! Wonderful call in the middle of the night. Mating call I guess, it is answered by one a tone or semitone lower.
